Ways to Save Money

Have you ever found yourself wishing you could save more money? Are you always telling yourself that you will save that extra few hundred dollars... next month? If you are like most Americans, you have the right idea; you just need a little direction to get it done. The credit counselors at Family Credit Management Service say that saving money can be much more painless than most people think. Small gestures like cutting coupons or packing a lunch for work are ways to save money like you have always wished you could.

There are many little habits and purchases that can be cut out of everyday life and will add up to thousands of dollars over the years. So many consumers do not realize how quickly something like eating out for lunch everyday can cost them. Let's put it in perspective; you eat out 5 days a week, at $6.00 a day for 52 weeks a year (5 days x $6.00 a day x 52 weeks per year). That's $1560.00 a year spent on lunch. Imagine how great it would feel to put that towards debt reduction. How about that soda you drink everyday? Let's say $.50 a can x 5 days a week x 52 weeks a year = $130 a year. Cutting back in these areas will free up money you probably never realized you had. Instead of spending that $6.00 a day on lunch, try putting it into a savings account. You will be surprised how quickly you will see your money grow.

Americans are always on the go, rushing everywhere, and fitting as much as they can into the day. Sometimes, this can inadvertently cost you money. Slowing down and taking the time to do research are great ways to save money and can save you hundreds. Many people will jump at the first "good deal" they see. For example, when shopping for your next vacation doing the research can benefit consumers tenfold. Instead of just calling the travel agent to book your vacation, check online promotions and deals and call the resort or hotel directly to see what specials they may have going on at this point. Spending a few extra days comparing options can help keep more of your hard earned cash in your pocket. Likewise, making a weekly menu for your household can help prevent overspending and impulse purchases at the supermarket. Credit counselors recommend you designate a certain time each week to sit down and decide what meals you will be making throughout the week. Next, go through the pantry and refrigerator to determine what ingredients you will need. Go to grocery store with a list and stick to it. Going to the store not knowing what you need can result in duplicate purchases and missing items you really needed.

Along with having a list when heading out to the grocery store, consumers should always bring along their trusty coupons. Checking with local supermarkets and finding out what days they are having specials, such as double coupon days, can save consumers a mound of money. Let's say you took the time to cut coupons out of the paper and then headed to the store on a double coupon day. Originally, you may have saved $10.00, but since it's a double coupon day, you just saved $20.00. Now instead of spending $50.00, you spend only $30.00, saving 40%! Have credit card debt? Put the money you saved towards your debt reduction. This is a prime example of how taking a little time and doing your research are big ways to save money.

Now you may be thinking; "Coupons? I don't do coupons!" Well, do not let your ego blow your budget. People sometimes let the stigma of being considered "uncool" stop them from doing something as small as using coupons. These consumers may be losing a lot of money in other areas of their life. When shopping, try comparing the name brand to the generic brand. Many consumers relate name brand to quality, which is not always the case. Usually generic and name brand are almost identical, other than their name. More often than not, the generic brand can be anywhere from $1.00 to $5.00 cheaper. Do not let yourself pay for a name. Family Credit Management Service suggests that bargain shopping can be brought to all aspects of consumer needs. Food, clothing, and toiletries can all be found at a bargain price. Most stores such as Wal-mart or Target have their own store brands on anything from contact solution to peanut butter. Likewise, clothing stores like TJ Max, Marshalls, and Burlington Coat Factory offer name brand clothing at discount prices. For example, a pair of women's Silver Jeans runs about $75.00 at The Buckle, the same pair of jeans was found at TJ Max for $17.00. That is $58.00 that can be put toward a savings account or debt reduction.

Whatever your weakness may be, brand name clothing, Taco Bell every day, or being too proud to cut those coupons, you should work hard to reverse those habits. Using any of the simple tips on ways to save money can help save hundreds of dollars each month without the help of credit counselors. Before you know it, you will have that nest egg growing in a plush blanket of savings. So cut back, sit back, and watch your money grow.
