Are you finally ready to look for you first apartment? Is that little red sports car just begging you to buy it? Have you overcome bad credit by seeking help with debt, visiting a credit counselor, or completing a debt management program? Before you go after those finer things in life, you better make sure your credit is in good standing. Many people do not realize landlords, mortgage brokers, car salesmen, even some employers review a credit report before handing over the keys or the money. That's why building your credit and using it wisely is going to be incredibly important in the future of your finances.

When a prospective tenant is applying to rent an apartment most, landlords will use a person's credit history to determine whether or not they feel they will make a good tenant. A landlord will not want to rent an apartment to a tenant with poor credit history because if you did not pay those accounts, what will be your motivation to pay your rent? More often your credit report is not only being used as an indicator of your creditworthiness, it is being used to determine your eligibility for employment. Many employers, not just banks, have begun reviewing credit history as a way to decide whether they feel the applicant is not responsible enough to be employed with their company.

What many consumers do not realize is how easy it is to harm your credit. As credit grantors are being given more rights, the growing trend is to utilize collection agencies for payments most Americans would never give a second thought. Overdue library books or video rentals are increasingly being sent to collection agencies. These delinquencies are being reported and can have a damaging effect on your credit report. Another major cause for collection accounts on credit histories is medical bills. Hospitals and doctors are some of the quickest accounts to be sent to collections. Even if it is a bill that insurance should pay, every consumer should be proactive and stay on top of that bill. No one else will handle it for you. If you currently have bad credit, immediately get help with debt. You may find the help you need through a debt management program offered by a non-profit credit counselor.

While there are many ways to harm your credit, there are also many ways to build or rebuild your credit history. One tip that may be the easiest to achieve is to make sure to open your mail. So many consumers to do not open the bills they receive. While they may not always be pleasant to look at, you should always go through any bills. Verify all the charges, and make sure to handle discrepancies immediately. This is one of the easiest ways to stay on top of your financial situation.

If you are new to the world of credit, it is very important to begin to build your credit history. Opening checking or savings accounts and being responsible with those accounts are the first steps in the right direction. Opening a credit card is another option for building and rebuilding bad credit. Opening a major credit card may be difficult for a first timer, but if you are approved for the card there are few things to keep in mind.

  1. Keep your spending under control.
Treat a credit card as cash and pay it in full every month. If you do not feel you will have the money to pay the full balance, at least make the minimum payment. Always remember to live within your means. If you can do this you may very well avoid needing help with debt and/or a debt management program.
  2. Always repay your debts in a timely fashion.
This is one of the first things a credit counselor will always tell you. Realizing the importance of making on time payments and paying back your debts will help to keep your spending in check.

Secured credit cards are another avenue for building credit. Secured cards are essentially prepaid credit cards. When inquiring about secured credit cards, it is important to make sure the bank will report these cards to the credit bureaus. Some lenders are willing to report the card as unsecured, which is seen more positively on the credit report. Interest fees and late fees may tend to be higher with a secured credit card. Consumers should check with their local banks to determine what types of credit building programs may be offered.

Whether you are buying a house or applying for a new job, your credit history will play a large role in your financial future. Preventing or recovering from bad credit can save you tens, maybe even hundreds, of thousands of dollars over a lifetime. With a positive credit history you will be eligible for lower interest rates, better finance terms, and you will be more likely to get that dream home or new car you always wanted. Keeping in mind the importance of credit history and educating yourself on the best ways to build your credit will give you an advantage that will last a lifetime.
